Building Good Credit

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Building a good credit can be done in various ways. If you are fed up of the collectors tirelessly chasing you to pay your debts or if you are disappointed at your loan application being turned down, because of absence of credit history, you should learn how to do build your credit. The most important thing to remember is not to buy unnecessary items. Do not convert your ‘want’ into ‘need’, as it can drag you deeper in debt. If you are looking to build credit and do not have any history, set your priorities properly.

Bad Credit Building Credit

If your credit is bad, buy a DIY kit to get started. Visit the public library and read books that take you step-by-step through the method of repairing your credit. Many libraries let you copy and print forms that you can fill and then dispatch to your credits.

Your local library has systematic guides that contain methods for learner debtors about how to write letters to creditors. Letters are better than calling up creditors as few of them are least bothered about your problem and can take action against you. Also writing letters lets you keep a copy with you and you can use it as a proof in a courtroom instead of conversation on the phone. If some statement is made or an understanding is reached, which the creditor then disputes, you can submit it as evidence to the court and they will hear you. Keep all documents associated with your credit history in a secure place. If you have written letters to your creditors, keep a copy of every letter sent in the safe place. If you see any mistakes in your bills or credit, reports, contact the concerned persons immediately and dispute the charges. If you have purchased an item or service on your credit card that later turned out to be defective or gave poor service, then you need not pay the charges. But you have to dispute the charges with the parties that were responsible for the act. If they do not replace the item or compensate you for a service or product, you are justified in refusing the payment.

After you have disputed the charges with the parties, then contact your card issuer and apprise them of the situation. If you have a credit card with bad credit, pay your debts and then the monthly installments on the credit card. The irony is that you are clearing the debt and at the same time, sinking into debt. This is a way out when you have no option.

If you are thinking that there is no need of a credit line or credit card, as you pay all the bills with money, then wait. Here is why this is a good option.

The demands of the today’s world require you to own at least one major credit card. When you call any company to whom you owe money, they will start by asking you to pay by credit card. When you apply for a job, home, mortgage, car loan, or other type of credit, you are most likely to be rejected. Many lenders do not approve credit to people with no credit history. They expect you to build your credit line from your teens and they suspect those who do not. They do not know you and judge you based on their assumptions. Hence it is your best bet to build your credit line today, make payments on time and do not buy goods you do not need. Remaining debt-free implies controlling the flow of money every month and making timely payments.
